Lee Maracle Awarded the 2017 Bonham Centre Award
The Bonham Centre Awards were established in 2008 to recognize an individual or group that has made a significant contribution to the advancement of and education about public recognition of sexual diversity. To learn more about the Bonham Centre Awards and its past recipients click here.
This year, the Awards will focus on Indigenous leadership in sexual diversity. As it is the 150th Anniversary of Confederation, we have chosen to highlight the history and leading contributions of Indigenous communities in recognizing sexual diversity, long predating European settlement. Our Bonham Centre Award recipients this year are Kent Monkman, Candy Palmater, Teddy Syrette and Lee Maracle.
Lee Maracle is a Professor of Aboriginal Studies at the University of Toronto and an award-winning author and poet. She has received a “Writer of the Year” award from Circle Craft, a North American Native writer’s circle and the JT Stewart Award for her body of work. She has an Honorary Doctorate from St. Thomas University and received the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee medal. She is the author of Ravensong (revitalized edition, May 2017) and Bobbi Lee Indian Rebel (revitalized edition, May 2017).
